Day 8, Lauingen to Donauwörth

Hrumph!  The day started with the stingiest breakfast so far, and tepid coffee to boot. But we were at least fuelled for an undemanding day. Again it has been pretty flat going on a mixture of country roads, cycle paths, and gravel paths through woodland. Again there were many small lakes with a plethora of bird and fish life. And the odd dam and power station thrown in for a bit of variety. The obligatory coffee and cake stop was made at Hochstadt with a pause to admire the schloss on the edge of the village. More interesting was the stork nest in its metal basket on top of one of the towers. We have seen many storks wandering the fields and they are clearly encouraged back to the nests they reuse every year by residents who build these platforms to facilitate nest building. The day's weather was worse than forecast and we didn't see the sun until late afternoon so it was pretty chilly cycling (13.5C in the forest sections, 15C in the open) with every layer worn, and there were no hills to warm us with effort. We even had some more spitty rain, but nothing that really came to anything. We reached our destination at lunchtime and I had a fab bowl of spaghetti (Anne: bruschetta) which was easy on the wobbly crown. That's 36 hours it's lasted now, just another 16 days to go!  An exploration of Donauwörth filled the afternoon along with a stop for an ice coffee, which would have been better if the sun was shining!  We seem to have an entire apartment in the hotel we are in tonight. It will be huge a contrast to where we stay tomorrow ... watch this space!

26.5 miles at 11.3 mph avg. 2 hrs 20 mins moving time to achieve an incredible ascent of 67m!
