Day 9, Donauwörth to Ingolstadt

Today was a day of 2 halves. The first half was pretty hilly and did involve a couple of get-off-and-pushes, but only for very short stretches, and only because those bits were  on loose gravel. We grabbed a bit of bread and cheese from breakfast as we knew there would be less places to stop on the way today, and so it proved. The early route was a pleasant but cool 15C and took us away from the Danube into nearby foothills, but gradually the day warmed up. We followed Eurovelo signage to route 6 which diverted from our intended lowland route and took us through high forest before plummeting down into Neuburg. As we hit the bottom of the steep hill we were flagged down by a c.15 year-old lad cycling with his grandfather coming the opposite direction. Both were Serbian and looked pretty fit but were lugging a lot of gear and had quite a long way yet to go. They wanted to check the route with us and to hear that there were no hills. Happily we persuaded them (easily!) not to go the way we'd come, but to go the way we'd intended along the river valley, the turnoff to which we found for them. They were well pleased so I hope they got through ok. The hills are no problem for most German riders as we reckon that 60% of the many bikes we see are e-bikes. In fact, for folk of our age group that probably rises to 90%. Germany's taken to the e-bike revolution big time!

A lunch stop at a cafe overlooking the river, and under the Neuburg Schloss, fuelled us for the second half which was almost entirely flat all the way to Ingolstadt. By far the majority of today's ride has been on gravel so the bikes are looking pretty dusty!  After a wander round and a coffee stop in the town we rode out to the outskirts where we are staying at a camp site in a Camping Barrel. It's very neat and cosy and quite a contrast to the hotels we've been used to until now. Just a pity there's no WiFi.

44 miles at 9.6 mph avg. 4 hrs 32 min moving time at ascend 390m.
